Invitation to joint press conference by NEHAWU, COSATU, SACP, SASCO, YCLSA and SAUS on the NEHAWU national programme of action to protect and defend workers against COVID-19

Members of the media are invited to a joint press conference to be addressed by the leadership of the following organisations:

· National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU]

· Congress of South African Trade Unions [COSATU]

· South African Communist Party [SACP]

· South African Students Congress [SASCO]

· Young Communist League of South Africa [YCLSA]

· And the South African Union of Students [SAUS]

The aim of the press conference is to communicate the state of readiness and details of the NEHAWU National Day of Action scheduled to take place on the 3rd September in the form of submissions of memorandums to the Presidency, National Parliament and the Premiers offices in the 9 provinces.

The build-up programme to the National Day of Action will include a National Prayers Day on the 1st September 2020 in honour of front line workers who have lost their lives and the encouragement of motorists to hoot in support of frontline workers on the 2nd September 2020 including motorcades across the country which will be going from workplace to workplace saluting and thanking all frontline workers for their contribution so far.

The press conference will also touch on the following issues:

· The support the fraternal organisations will give to the NEHAWU national programme of action

· Update on the progress of the campaign so far

· The onslaught on the right to strike and collective bargaining

· COVID-19 corruption
